Description
Children of Divorce is a 1927 American silent romantic drama film directed by Frank Lloyd and starring Clara Bow, Esther Ralston, and Gary Cooper. Adapted from the 1927 novel of the same name by Owen Johnson, the film is about a young flapper who tricks her wealthy friend into marrying her during a night of drunken revelry. Even though she knows that he is in love with another woman, she refuses to grant him a divorce and repeat the mistake of her divorced parents. Clara Bow’s performance at the end of the film is considered one of the best of its type on film at that point. Clara Bow was dating Gary Cooper at the time this film was being made. According to Esther Ralston, Bow scandalized her cast members with disclosures of their nightly sexual escapades. Ralston said she was among the shocked; however, she still enjoyed working with Bow. Reportedly, Gary Cooper was dismissed from the film by the director for failing to get a scene right but Clara Bow intervened and Cooper was reinstated after one day’s absence.
